The Rise of “Quiet Luxury,” Gen Z’s Consumption Habits and a New Battle of the Sexes

May 17, 2023

Each week, we sift through a ton of content and then debate it ad nauseam at FEVO HQ. And since good content, like the mind, is a terrible thing to waste, we are also sharing it here with you, our fans, in the form of this weekly blog post on e-commerce, media and life on the internet.

Hypebeast: The rise of quiet luxury isn't just a TikTok trend
Cultural monoliths like Succession are contributing to the trend of “quiet” luxury, or the idea that the high-end clothing need not be flashy. (Just picture the unassuming, monotone Loro Piana knits favored by Logan and Kendall Roy.) The article points out some important metrics that substantiate this trend: “the output of luxury online brands, new apparel, handbags, and footwear that have dropped this year featuring logos have declined 18% YoY. Likewise, patterned garments have only contributed 23% of luxury clothing to date versus 27% last year.”

ESPN: Wrexham to play U.S. women in 7x7 tournament in June
Despite what the headline says, this tournament does not just include Wrexham and a team of former U.S. Women’s National Team players, but also 30 other squad featuring names like Cesc Fabregas, Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, Mia Hamm and others. It’s a $1M winner-take-all tournament created by the same folks who put on The Basketball Tournament, and it’s a masterclass in marketing, albeit a tried-and-true one: manufacture high stakes with recognizable brands and personalities, and the fans will turn up.

Digital Native: Seismic waves of Gen Z behavior
This piece from VC Rex Woodbury tackles what he identifies as three generational shifts that are shaping technology and culture: sustainability, mental health and digitally native jobs. As Woodbury dissects each of these shifts, he hypothesizes on how they will influence consumer behavior and the companies that are best positioned to benefit from them.
